Comments A spur of the moment trip caused by low cost accomodations & airfare, plus a chance to get newly certified son James into the water between June's certification in Maui and next Easter's trip sent us to Hawk's Cay on Duck Key, halfway down the Keys. We got a great summer price on a beautiful 2 story condo. It was a fun long weekend on and under water as we explored the Keys, dove, and enjoyed the resort.
Hawk's Cay is a much-nicer-than-usual Keys accomodation. It's a full fledged resort. 5 pools, kids club, 5 restaurants, mini golf, spa, dock facilities, dolphin program, and a dive shop. Awesome for families, especially with pre teens - there were tons of kids.
We had variable diving conditions...great one day, currents & bad vis the next. Tough for a new diver but he handled it with divemaster's help...which cost $100/day! Pretty steep for a guide but the Keys dives are unguided except for the deep wrecks.
Good fish life and the Thunderbolt is a fun wreck. Beautiful ride to Key West for one day. Skip Miami, and fly to Ft. Lauderdale with AirTran or Southwest. Much easier airport to navigate.
