Because of an Undercurrent Report, we went with Key Dives on Islamorada, mile marker 79. (There are other dive shops with similar names.) It was spring break week, so they had 18 divers and two who were getting certified. Nevertheless, the boat captain and head DM, Mike, know how to run a tight operation. One DM with 6 divers. Show up at 8am, and leaving the pier at 8.30, and in the water by about 9. We did the wreck at 100 feet, and saw the largest Grouper of my scuba life. The second dive was filled with many large schools of small, colorful fish, and beautiful, young, healthy coral, an hour dive. Mike was exceptional--loves his job--writing on his underwater board telling us the names of fish. The other DMs, Sam and Jeff, also were excellent. They all worked together to change out tanks and they gave great dive briefings. Friendly, efficient crew, and surprisingly good diving. Only regret is that we only dove with them one day. Key Dives has excellent, new equipment, and even supply computers. |
