Comments This was a casual long-weekend dive trip to Key Largo with a handful of friends. We chose Quiescence for its smaller boat and personalized service, and for an opportunity do REEF fish surveys and BleachWatch coral surveys. Captain Steve took us to 11 of the Key Largo dive sites, including Time Machine (my request), Rob’s Nob (my favorite), the Elbow, a couple of Molasses Reef sites, and one night dive to the Slabs. All of the dives were pretty shallow, 25-50 feet, so we did 4 dives on 1 of the days.
The Florida Reef tract is in terrible condition from bleaching, coral diseases, hurricanes, and ordinary pollution. The Keys shut down their septic tanks and installed sewage collection and treatment less than 10 years ago. It is hoped that removing this stressor will allow the reef to recover. There is also significant coral restoration work being done in the Keys, and some of it looks successful. Plantings of staghorn coral from 5+ years ago appear to have established themselves and formed dense thickets. Coral Restoration Foundation and Mote Marine Laboratory are experimenting with hundreds of genotypes of corals to identify species that can thrive under the Reef Tract conditions. You will see these outplantings when you dive Key Largo. You can also participate in a coral planting day. Several of the Keys outfitters (Quiescence does not appear to be one of them) run coral restoration dives one or 2 days each month.
I performed 10 Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF) fish surveys, and perceived that fish populations are still suffering from overfishing, invasive red lionfish predation, or some other cause. There were fewer and smaller schools of wrasse, snappers, and grunts than I expected, and VERY few big fish of breeding size.
I highly recommend diving the Florida Keys because they are truly beautiful, and I recommend Quiescence for its excellent service.
