Comments First time diving north of San Fran which had more wildlife than I had found in the Monterrey area. All diving was shore diving which I enjoyed with friends who were semi-locals, daughter of my friend is a marine biology grad. student who knew the area well.

Shore Dive at Van Damme Beach, large protected cove, no surf which made more exposed exciting locations unsafe for diving that day.

Very pleasant day and site. Some kelp, mostly sloping rocky sloping topography. We dove north west side of bay which was about a 15 min. swim from the parking area near the restrooms. Saw a number of commonly found Northern Calif fish and many abalone not often seen to the south. Average depth was 50-60 which was were the slope bottomed out. Water temp was a cool 52-49 degrees. I was diving dry which was comfortable. My friends where in 7 mils which was a bit chilly after 40 mins.

We also did Abalone free diving in a more exposed location the next day in the trip. Free diving in a dry suit is a challenge but doable. The abalone hunting was productive if not a little pricey for my non-resident permit. The abalone a true delicacy. I look forward to a return.
