I have been diving the opener of California Lobster season since 1982. I have been to Cortez Banks over 10 times in those years. This trip was scheduled to go to the Banks, but we knew from the weather conditions that just wasn't going to happen. We started at Santa Barbara Island and dove some familiar sites. The water temperature was surprisingly cold - 59 degrees - for SBI. One 10# Bug was taken and I passed on many barely legal bugs in search of good legal bugs. As expected conditions forced us to run to Santa Rosa Island. We dive Talcott Shoals and managed a limit of reasonable bugs for the day. I had a 10 foot+ great white cruise by twice while I was working on bugs in ledges. Other divers had similar experiences. Amazingly we were able to move to San Miguel Island the next day and dive in great conditions. The water temp had risen to 64 degrees and diving was comfortable in a 7mm wetsuit. I scored a 10# and a 6.5# bug on my first dive on SMI. Plenty of bugs in the shallows and a limit (7) for the day. Back to SRI Talcott Shoals for the last day. More bugs but many were just short of legal. I pulled and gauged over 14 on the last dive. NOW ABOUT THAT FOOD- About half the boat suffered lobster's revenge the last two days. I attribute the affliction to serving partially cooked food that was never brought up to proper temperature. Overall the food was quite poor and not up to minimal standards of a live aboard. Worse than anything I have had in my foreign travels. |
