I have dived with Captain/owner Kevin Metz of Underwater Explorers on numerous occasions but have been remiss in filing a reader report for this excellent operator. The 34 foot Explorer is very roomy, especially with only six divers. There is plenty of room for all equipment and a partially enclosed deck for wind, rain, or to get out of the Florida sun. Sightseers, photographers, spearos, and lobster hunters are all welcome. Divers are divided up into as many groups as needed. Drinks and snacks are always available. The boat has a warm water shower and there is a "primative", but functional head, scheduled to be upgraded in the near future. Entry is generally made by an effortless backroll, there is a well designed and sturdy ladder for reentry. Most of the diving in Boynton Beach is drift diving off the vibrant reef, populated by numerous, diverse reef fish, many turtles, eels, lobster, and Nurse sharks. There are occasional appearances by other sharks, Reef, Hammerhead, Bull and others. The inside, West facing reefs are about 55-65 feet of depth. The outside, East facing reefs are between about 75 and 95 feet. There are also several wrecks in the area, the Castor being the preeminent site. The Castor has a year round population of Goliath Grouper but is also a major site of the Goliath Grouper aggregarion each year in August and September when hundreds are at the site. |
