It's BIG. At 14 x 11 inches - and more than one inch thick - with more than 250 pages and weighing in at more than five pounds, this mighty tome announced its arrival with a sudden thud on my doormat.
It's Big; A Photographic Album of the World's Largest Animals - by Marko Dimitrijevic and Amos Nachoum.
The authors, one Swiss and one Israeli, who both live in the U.S., met on a Tonga expedition, and their mutual love of big animals has kept them working together. This book, uniquely the work of two master photographers, represents the 30-year product of their association and is a testimony to the animals they have encountered: big, and consequently dramatic. They call it "Big Animals - Big Emotions."
It's not just marine life that's featured. Repeated trips to Africa and elsewhere have resulted in thousands of images. But it's not just Africa's "Big Five" either. Page after page of attention-grabbing images of everything from marine iguanas to blue whales, American bison to polar bears, grizzlies to gorillas will astound the reader. The commentary reveals that while many of their photographs result from the excellent planning and persistence of Big Animal Global Expeditions, other images resulted from opportunistic encounters with unexpected wildlife they achieved only because of their ability to react and shoot from the hip, so to speak. (I should warn, there's not a trace of a nudibranch or other macro life evident among its pages.)
Some familiar images have won past awards, but many have never been published. This is the ultimate coffee table book that will grab the interest of anyone opening it idly. They will be drawn to the lush photographs and into Amos' and Marko's world - the ultimate photo book about the giants of the animal kingdom.
