Award Winning Eel Shot

Turkish underwater photographer Kerim Sabuncuo?lu was only one of the winners of last year's Ocean photography awards, with this photo of a moray eel entangled in discarded fishing line. Sabuncuo?lu has traveled the world with his Nikon D800 and found this unfortunate creature in the Aegean Sea outside the city of Bodrum. It had chanced upon an opportune meal of an octopus arm, but it was a fisherman's bait, and the concealed hook went straight through the moray's jaw. In the struggle to free itself, it became more entangled and suffocated and died. It's a familiar story with monofilament lines left abandoned in the ocean to become ghost fishing.
