The scuba diving industry contributes between $8.5 and $20.4 billion annually to the world economy. It supports around 124,000 jobs across 170 countries, according to an international study by San Diego's Scripps Institute, published in Cell Reports Sustainability.

The researchers compiled a list of more than 11,500 dive operators across 170 countries and determined that direct spending on diving activities generates up to $3.2 billion annually. The larger figure takes into account indirect spending on such things as airfare and accommodations....
