The Maldives Diving Seasons

from the July, 2025 issue of Undercurrent   Subscribe Now

Strong currents run in the Maldives during January, February, and March, the dry monsoon season, with December and April transitional periods.

The monsoon originates in the northeast, bringing dry weather and clear water with powerful currents from the Indian Ocean. It also attracts sharks and other large animals. Divers call the current-driven dives "cardiac dives," so it's not for the inexperienced or faint of heart. A reef hook and SMB are essential.

From mid-May to November, the wet season is characterized by the south-westerly monsoon, which brings wet weather and mild currents. It's better for less experienced divers. Easier diving but less exciting and less sunbathing!
