The Shark Whisperer on Netflix

from the July, 2025 issue of Undercurrent   Subscribe Now

Filled with exceptional video of Ocean Ramsey gently free diving with tiger sharks and great whites, Netflix's new 90-minute "Shark Whisperer" makes a strong statement about protecting sharks worldwide.

What drives the documentary is exploring Ramsey's deep passion for sharks, knowing that on each dive she sacrifices her own safety. Born on Oahu in 1987, it's clear that her life and loves are underwater, not on land. Ramsey, who can hold her breath for more than six minutes, believes her calmness, fearlessness, and gentle presence have made her a member of the pack. If a shark comes too close, she just carefully pushes it away.

While not trained as a scientist, she carefully observes the sharks' behavior and has kept copious records on many. Some environmentalists and scientists are critical of her approach, judging her more as a show business performer than a scientist. But nearly 60 years ago, Dian Fossey, not a trained scientist, went to live among Rwanda's gorillas and was criticized by many in the scientific community. Her recorded behaviors, writings, and personal appearances spearheaded a successful international movement to save the gorillas.

While it's hard to take one's eyes off Ramsey's graceful ballets, listening to her words helps one understand what drives her. She clearly knows what she's doing. She is not naïve. Watch wide-eyed and listen carefully. Make your own judgment. Ocean Ramsey and her sharks are worth your time.
